Get Involved - How can I engage with EADI?
What Development Studies Associations can do in Times of Global Crises
Bilateral aid budgets are shrinking across many Development Assistance Committee donors, while resources are increasingly being redirected towards defence, migration, security, and domestic priorities. At the same time, the United States has stepped back from key elements of the post-1945 international development architecture, and new actors—including China, India, the Gulf States, and other middle powers—are reshaping international cooperation according to their own priorities and models.
These changes are not simply another cyclical downturn in development cooperation. They represent a structural shift in the global landscape, challenging long-established assumptions about international partnerships, financing, and the role of development research. As funding becomes more constrained and more fragmented, development studies faces growing pressure to demonstrate its relevance, maintain research capacity, and strengthen collaboration across institutions and regions.
In this context, no single institute can respond effectively on its own. Collective action has become more important than ever. As Europe's leading network for development research and training, EADI provides a platform through which members can collaborate, amplify their voices, build partnerships, and shape the future of the field.
This role builds on EADI's longstanding mission to:
- Promote excellence in research and education in development studies.
- Facilitate the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and information.
- Strengthen regional and global networks among development scholars and institutions.
- Inform and influence national and European policy debates on international development and cooperation.
For the period 2026–2029, EADI is focusing on three strategic objectives:
- Defending development studies as an independent and globally relevant intellectual enterprise.
- Supporting the next generation of development scholars and practitioners.
- Building more equitable North–South partnerships and diversifying the funding base for development research.

Be Part of our General Conference
Held every three years, the EADI General Conference is one of the largest international gatherings of development researchers, educators, and practitioners. It brings together the EADI community to exchange knowledge, present research, and discuss emerging challenges and debates in development studies.
Members are encouraged to contribute to the conference by organising panels that bring together researchers and practitioners around shared themes, showcase innovative research, and foster interdisciplinary and international dialogue. Panel sessions provide opportunities to present emerging findings, build collaborations, and contribute to shaping discussions within the development studies community.
Members can also contribute by submitting papers to existing panels or joining the conference as participants to exchange ideas, build networks, and engage with the wider EADI community. EADI members benefit from reduced conference registration fees.
Further information on proposal requirements, deadlines, and submission guidelines can be found on the EADI General Conference webpage here.
Propose and/or organise a Virtual Dialogue (Webinar) in Cooperation with us
EADI webinars provide a platform for members to share research, exchange knowledge, discuss emerging issues in development studies, and engage with the wider international development community.
They showcase current research, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and create opportunities for collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders.
Members are encouraged to participate in upcoming webinars or propose new webinar ideas related to their research, expertise, or areas of interest. EADI supports the visibility of approved webinars by promoting them through its website, newsletter, and social media channels. For further information on joining, proposing or organizing a Virtual Dialogue, please contact Ana Romano at romano(at)eadi.org. You can check our upcoming webinars here.
Write a Blog
All EADI members are encouraged to contribute to the Debating Development Research blog by sharing research findings, reflections, and evidence-informed perspectives on issues relevant to international development.
The blog provides a platform for discussion within the global development research community and welcomes contributions that stimulate debate and showcase the diversity of expertise across EADI's network.
Members may submit blog proposals throughout the year. Published posts are promoted through EADI's website, newsletter, and social media channels, helping authors reach a broad international audience. You can contact Christiane Kliemann at kliemann(at)eadi.org. The blog is a available here
Propose and/or lead Workshops in Partnership with us
Members are encouraged to propose workshop topics, especially those that support early career researchers and professionals, that address their learning needs and professional interests.
These may include developing research skills, preparing PhD proposals, strengthening academic writing, exploring career opportunities, finding internships, or building other competencies relevant to their work.
Experienced researchers and practitioners are also invited to propose and lead workshops based on their expertise. Selected workshops are organised in collaboration with EADI and may benefit from co-branding, joint promotion and visibility through EADI’s and the partner organization's communication channels. By sharing their knowledge and experience, workshop leaders contribute to capacity building, knowledge exchange, and professional development across the network.
Workshop proposals are considered in relation to EADI’s activities, priorities, and available resources. While online workshops can often be organised with limited costs, additional considerations apply to in-person activities, including logistical and financial requirements. For further information on proposing or leading a workshop, please contact Ana Romano at romano(at)eadi.org. You can check our upcoming workshops here
Propose Networking and Matchmaking Events
Members are encouraged to propose and co-develop networking and matchmaking events in partnership with EADI.
These activities can bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and students around shared interests, research themes, or professional goals, creating opportunities for new collaborations, facilitating knowledge exchange, and strengthening connections across the EADI community.
Networking activities may include thematic exchange sessions, research collaboration matchmaking, mentoring opportunities, career development events, or initiatives that connect researchers across regions, disciplines, and career stages. By creating spaces for dialogue and collaboration, members contribute to a more connected and inclusive development studies community. For further information, please contact Ana Romano at romano(at)eadi.org.
Propose a Regional PhD Symposium
These events provide a platform for doctoral researchers to present their work, receive feedback from peers and senior academics, build professional networks, and engage with current debates in development studies.
Regional PhD Symposia also strengthen connections between institutions, foster collaboration within and across regions, and support the development of the next generation of development researchers. Institutional Members interested in organising a symposium are invited to work with EADI to develop the concept, programme, and format in line with shared objectives and available resources.
An example of this initiative is the EADI–ELTE PhD Symposium for Hungary and Romania, which brought together doctoral researchers from institutions in both countries to present their research, discuss contemporary development issues, and connect with the wider EADI network. Further information is available on the EADI–ELTE PhD Symposium for Hungary and Romania. For further information, please contact Ana Romano at romano(at)eadi.org.
Propose and/or organise a Podcast Series
Podcast series can provide a platform for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders to share perspectives, communicate research findings, and explore different approaches to development issues.
They can contribute to making development research more accessible, fostering dialogue across disciplines and regions, and strengthening connections between academia and society.
Members may propose podcast topics, formats, or series that align with their research interests, expertise, or current debates in development studies. By contributing to podcasts, members support knowledge exchange and help amplify diverse voices within the EADI community. For further information, please contact Ana Romano at romano(at)eadi.org. Check our podcast series
Publish in the European Journal of Development Research (EJDR)

Members and the wider development studies community are encouraged to submit original research articles for consideration th ough the journal’s peer-review process. All submissions are subject to editorial assessment and peer review, and publication cannot be guaranteed.
EADI and the EJDR also support early career researchers through the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Initiative. The programme offers a supported learning pathway that helps early career authors better understand the publication process and strengthen their manuscripts before formal peer review. Eligible submissions receive initial editorial feedback and guidance while continuing to follow the journal’s standard review procedures.
Further information on submission requirements, author guidelines, and the ECR Initiative is available on the EJDR webpage. You can also contact the managing editor Talia Vela-Eiden at vela-eiden(at)eadi.org.
