Agroforestry as Climate Change Adaptation. The Case of Cocoa Farming in Ghana

Open access book
Mette Fog Olwig, Aske Skovmand Bosselmann, Kwadwo Owusu (eds.) - Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University (RUC)
This book provides multidisciplinary perspectives on the potential of agroforestry to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on cocoa production. Against the backdrop of increasingly precarious farmer livelihoods, it focuses on cocoa-agroforestry in Ghana – the second largest producer of cocoa in the world. Taking the reader on a journey across experimental plots and on-farm studies, the book delivers a holistic understanding of cocoa-agroforestry.

Climate Change and Critical Agrarian Studies

Open access book
Ian Scoones, Saturnino M. Borras Jr., Amita Baviskar, Marc Edelman, Nancy Lee Peluso, Wendy Wolford (eds.) - International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)
Emerging from the dynamics of capitalism since the industrial revolution - as well as industrialisation under state-led socialism - the consequences of climate change are especially profound for the countryside and its inhabitants. This open access book interrogates the narratives and strategies that frame climate change and examines the institutionalised responses in agrarian settings. It explores how different people - in relation to class and other co-constituted axes of social difference such as gender, race, ethnicity, age and occupation - are affected by climate change, as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation responses being implemented in rural areas.

Open Access Book
Mirjam Steglich, Thomas Beutler, Saymore Ngonidzashe Kativu et al. - German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)  |  The Centre for Rural Development, Humboldt University, Berlin SLE
The Global North increasingly recognises the need to take responsibility for the global ecological emergency that is emerging predominately as the result of its past and present actions. This study explores agroecology as a holistic approach for agri-food system transformation and sustainable rural development. Its aim is to contribute to a better understanding of how the Global North can translate recognition of its responsibility as a key contributor to the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable food systems globally into action locally.
