There is growing consensus that the liberal international order as we have known it is dwindling. Since it never really lived up to its expectations, proponents and critics alike do not think it should be reinvigorated. The new world order that is taking shape is a “multiplex” one, characterized by a plurality of actors and a great political, ideological, and cultural diversity. In contrast to competing models of world order, multiplexity does not see traditional forms of power as the main driver, but rather the interaction capacity of actors that can, for example, be derived from the capacity to reach agreements.

Entangled Future Im/mobilities. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Mobility Studies

Open Access Book
Daniela Atanasova, Romana Bund, Dovaine Buschmann et al. (eds.) - Department of Development Studies, University of Vienna

A critical examination of im/mobilities raises questions as to how power relations and crisis-driven futures enable, inhibit or prevent mobility, what meanings are culturally constructed around im/mobilities and how they are experienced. The contributors to this volume look at entangled future mobilities and immobilities using humanities and social science approaches in diverse examples

Journal of Political Ecology
Vijay Kolinjivadi, Jean-François Bissonnette, Daniel Leguizamon Alejo , Laura Valencia, Gert Van Hecken - Institute of Development Policy, University of Antwerp (IOB)
This paper describes the transformation of the biophysical landscape of the planet into replicable blueprints of the plantation plot. The plantation as a colonial-era organizational template is an ongoing ecological process premised on disciplining bodies and landscapes into efficient, predictable, calculable, and controllable plots to optimize commodity production and is dependent on racialized and gendered processes of dehumanization.

Co-authored by over forty leading natural and social scientists from the Earth Commission, and led by Johan Rockström, Joyeeta Gupta and Qin Dahe, the research provides a scientific foundation for assessing the stability and resilience of the planet and the connection therein with human wellbeing.
