Will the war in the Ukraine radically reshuffle the global economic, financial and political order? Half a year after the Russian invasion, it has become increasingly clear that some of the changes will be far-reaching and are likely to be persistent. This column introduces a new eBook that brings together a selection of representative contributions to the Vox debate on the economic consequences of the invasion for an early stocktaking of lessons and to provide a first assessment on what might lie ahead.

Alfonso Medinilla, Koen Dekeyser, Karim Karaki - European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM)
The European Green Deal is being reassessed in a highly securitised environment. This can also alter the global green transition and long-term credibility of the EU. This discussion paper zooms in on the green energy transition and food systems change under the Farm to Fork Strategy, identifying key challenges in maintaining an ambitious and effective EU ‘Green Deal diplomacy’. The changing context calls for a fundamentally outward-looking and global approach to green transition, one that more structurally links the EU’s own transition with the economic development, industrialisation, sustainable transition and security needs of countries in the Neighbourhood and Africa.

Unpacking 'new climate wars'. Actors and drivers of conflict in the Sahel

Signe Marie Cold-Ravnkilde, Boubacar Ba - Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)
As violence and insecurity increase in the Sahel, understanding the main causes and drivers of conflicts is of growing importance. In policy circles, the idea that climate change is causing violence and displacement is increasingly articulated in the popularised term of ‘climate wars’. This DIIS Report nuances this mainstream idea by arguing that violence and conflict in the Sahel are caused not by climate change, but by the presence of armed groups, jihadist insurgencies and military interventions with diverging political and ideological agendas.

March - April 2022
Tim Haesebrouck, Servaas Taghon, Hermine Van Coppenolle (eds.) - Ghent Centre for Global Studies (GCGS - UGent)
Taken aback by the violent intervention launched by the Russian authorities in Ukraine, the researchers of the Ghent Insti-tute for International and European Stud-ies aim to shine a light on the crisis with a new initiative: the GIES occasional paper. Starting from Monday March 21st 2022, contributions that present the analyses of our researchers on the Ukraine War were published on a daily basis. This first GIES occasional paper col-lects these contributions in an edited volume.

Fanning the Flames

How the European Union is fuelling a new arms race
Mark Akkerman, Pere Brunet, Andrew Feinstein et al. - Transnational Institute TNI
This analysis draws worrying conclusions from the European defence policy: The European Defence Fund (EDF) and its precursor programmes explicitly aim to strengthening the ‘global competitiveness’ of the technological industrial base of European defence. There is a major disconnect between such technologies and their potential impact beyond the profits they will generate. They will inevitably boost European arms exports and fuel the global arms race, which will in turn lead to more armed conflicts and wars, greater destruction, significant loss of life, and increased forced displacement.
