EJDR is looking to recruit its next 

Managing Editor

 to integrate its international editorial team and support the journal’s academic standing

The Managing Editor role is part-time, fully flexible, remote-based, and offered on a consultancy contract basis.

 

About the EJDR Managing Editor role

The EJDR Managing Editor is responsible for all day-to-day operations associated with the journal, ensuring that it is published on time and to a standard that conforms to best practice in professional publishing. The Managing Editor performs these tasks as an equal and respected member of the EJDR Editorial Team.

The Managing Editor must maintain a high standard of professional conduct; be courteous in all their dealings and demonstrate a strong customer orientation; have an excellent level of written and spoken English (proofreading/ editing of papers is sometimes required). A knowledge of French and Spanish is an advantage. 

The Managing Editor must be timely, self-motivated, and able to work independently; they must adhere to the highest professional standards in dealing with all parties and in managing any conflict resolution; and take the best decisions for the journal, from manuscript management to strategic overview.

The Managing Editor works with the EJDR’s Editor-in-Chief, the Editorial Team, the EADI Secretariat, and the EJDR’s publisher, Palgrave/ Springer Nature.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing the review and editorial process from the receipt of original submission through to production.

  • Managing the journal planning, adhering to the journal schedule provided by the publisher, and ensuring journal issues are ready on time; scheduling and managing deadlines.

  • Corresponding with members of the editorial team, publisher, authors and reviewers, and any other relevant parties.

  • Monitoring progress of the review and editorial process; identifying issues and problems needing the attention of the Editor-in-Chief.

  • Providing training and support to guest editors on the journal’s editorial process.

  • Working with the editorial team on enhancing the editorial process of the journal.

  • Preparing reports and presentations on the journal for different audiences as required, based on data and reports provided by the publisher.

  • Managing the submission and peer review on-line tool in collaboration with the publisher. 

  • Assisting in developing the marketing and editorial strategy of the journal; managing EJDR’s LinkedIn account.

  • Providing general support to the Editor-in-Chief.

  • Preparing and attending the annual EJDR team meeting, plus any other relevant meetings.

 

Candidate specifications

Essential:

  • Strong customer focus.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Fluent written and spoken English.

  • Organised, professional, and able to work independently.

Desirable:

  • Experience of publishing in an academic environment, as an author, reviewer, or editor.

  • Experience of using a manuscript management system such as ScholarOne or Editorial Manager.

  • Understanding of academic publishing.

  • Understanding of French and Spanish.

  • An interest in marketing and the ability to promote the journal in a professional capacity through social media.

  • Familiarity with the international development and development studies arena, EADI’s work, and/ or EJDR itself.

 

Contractual arrangements

The Managing Editor role is part-time, and based remotely. Applicants with varied backgrounds are welcome.

The role is offered on a consultancy contract basis. The selected candidate will invoice EADI directly each month for the work carried out, providing a breakdown of the hours worked. The consultant will be responsible for their own taxation, national insurance and similar liabilities or contributions.

  • Position: EJDR Managing Editor.

  • Starting date: ASAP.

  • Duty Station: Remote.

  • Travel: 1-2 times per annum, in Europe.

  • Duration and contract type: Consultancy – hourly rate contract, part-time (15 hrs per week on average). One-year contract, renewable.

  • Payment: Monthly invoice and timesheet with actual number of hours worked.

Recruitment process

The selection process will take place in July 2024 and will consist of a remote interview with EJDR’s Editor in Chief, the EADI Executive Director and its outgoing Managing Editor, and another member of the Editorial Team.

The contract start date is ASAP, no later than the 12th of August 2024.
