Europe and Transitions in (Southern) Africa

Since the end of minority rule in Southern Africa the emergence of a new multi-polarity in the global power relations also directly affected the sovereign states in the sub-region. The WG investigates the impact and shifts at both the domestic levels of societies as well as their positioning in the international context.

What are the core topics?

Core topics focus on if and how power relations are adapted and modified in the local and international context. We look at how governance especially in the Southern African region plays out vis-à-vis the old (Europe) and new external actors.

What are our aims? What do we want to achieve as a Working Group?

We seek to assess social change social, economic and political change as well as state power and other agencies mainly (but not exclusively) in the Southern African region since the end of formal settler-colonial rule under liberation movements as governments.
