Oxford Department of International Development, Queen Elizabeth House

(ODID)

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) is the focus for postgraduate teaching and applied research on international development issues at the University of Oxford. ODID is a distinct multi-disciplinary 'faculty' within the Social Sciences Division. ODID is known for its frontier research on economic growth and instability, trade and investment, poverty and inequality, insecurity and conflict, migration and refugees, global governance and environment, children and human development. Our 60 academic and research staff, and six externally funded groups, represent most social science disciplines and world regions. As part of a global epistemic community, we aim to generate ideas that set agendas for scholars, governments, international agencies and civil society. The Department provides postgraduate research training (DPhil and MPhil) and four one-year MSc taught courses to some 200 students. These programmes involve advanced research methods, intensive personal supervision, subject specialisation and fieldwork. International demand for these programmes is high and entrance standards are exacting. Scholarships are available from the ESRC, Oxford University and Departmental funds. We are often known in Oxford and around the world as QEH, a reference to Queen Elizabeth House – now the name of our building at 3 Mansfield Road, but formerly the title of the original 1954 foundation by Royal Charter at 21 St Giles.
