The Institute was established in 1991 by the Council of the University of Malta as a Centre/Institute to promote the study of  European integration, and engage both in teaching and research. It became a Jean Monnet centre of excellence in 2004 and has been active in a wide range of research collaborations and hosted numerous workshops and conferences. The Institute offers several programmes, ranging from diploma to PhD courses and has over a thousand graduates. It currently runs a taught BA and MA programme while also offering research degrees at MA and doctoral level. The Institute hosts its own library and provides regular seminars and events open to students and the general public. Our staff actively engages in research and network activities in various areas including EU economic governance, EU external relations, EU institutions, EU policy making, culture and identity in Europe and Europeanization.
