SP39 - Innovating Methods to Find (G)local Solutions for Global Challenges

Convened by Laura Camfield, King's College London, and Keetie Roelen, Open University

Seed panel on innovative methods in international/ global development, including initiatives that seek to innovate (i) participatory and co-creative methods (e.g. storytelling), (ii) technology driven or facilitated methods (e.g. AI, big data), and (iii) approaches that seek to bridge across the former two (e.g. mixed methods, citizen science). We welcome papers that provide examples of these methods and/or address pertinent questions underpinning them such as how they relate to a decolonised approach to research, including working in equitable partnerships, or whether development researchers should work with or resist technological advances such as the use of LLMs (large-language models such as Sensemaker) in analysis that may reduce the cost of qualitative research but are fraught with bias, lack of transparency and sustainability concerns.
