Editorial

We are very proud to see that, within the first three weeks of its release, our new open access book "Challenging Global Development. Towards Decoloniality and Justice" has already been downloaded more than 12.000 times! And we are also happy to offer an online-presentation of our equally successful previous book "Civil Society Responses to Changing Civic Spaces" on 05 December. From our blog we've got some suggestions for structurally improving academic partnerships today and proudly present our first blog post in French language which critically reflects on the notion of resilience. You might not know that our second official working language is French.
From our Blog:

Towards Structural Changes for Building Responsible Academic Partnerships

"We are time overdue for an examination of global development using different lenses and engaging more diverse voices. Institutions in global development must shift and broaden their horizons to recognise that global inequalities, exclusion and injustices also affect academic development work", write the authors of our latest blog. On the basis of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and an ongoing reflection process on the necessary structural changes, they suggest several strategic approaches to create responsible and equitable academic partnerships between the Global North and Global South.

Remaking the Urban in the Peripheries

In this lecture, Karen Coelho, retired Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), discusses how “Resettlement colonies” - sites of mass formal low-income housing –  have emerged on metropolitan peripheries across India over the past two decades, redefining the social geographies and institutional practices of urban marginality. Highlight: Big Data for Development Studies
Big data has revolutionised the natural and applied sciences (and commerce). However, its use within development studies has been comparatively limited. The paper uses the publicly available Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT) as a source of near-real-time big data. The aim is to develop an academically robust methodology, that can be replicated and easily modified to suit the needs of a wide development studies scholarship, while also exploring its prospects for generating valuable actionable knowledge, through an established academic–practitioner partnership.
