Nicky Pouw of University of Amsterdam explains the most important results of the SHPIG project in a short video.

"We looked at two social protection policies: cash transfers to the poor and free social health insurance, in both Ghana and Kenya. We specifically looked at the interaction between the two policies. Many African governments are formalising their social support systems to fight poverty. This is highly political due to budget constrains and nepotism. How can these governments extend social protection through a more integrated and inclusive system?"

This report summarizes the dissemination workshop “Social protection for inclusive growth in Africa?”, hosted by the research group Social and Health Policies for Inclusive Growth (SHPIG) at the University of Amsterdam on 30 June 2017. The workshop was a half-day dissemination event, to share some key findings from the SHPIG project and get feedback from moderated roundtable discussions.

Within the Social Health Protection for Inclusive Growth (SHPIG) project a stakeholder workshop was held on 26 May 2017 in Nairobi, to present first findings for Kenya of the two-year research project funded by Wotro. The workshop showed the importance of this kind of workshops for the knowledge management and dissemination, and the interpretation of results.

To understand the overall dynamics of policy change and social protection, as well as the mutual influence of different policies on each other, a mixed method approach was used combining econometric cost-effectiveness analysis with qualitative impact and political economy analysis. In the first policy brief of the SHPIG project, first policy messages were published.
