RT013 - The use of specific narratives to open civic space
Convened by Nicole Walshe (Knowledge Hub Governance & Citizenship, Oxfam Novib, the Netherlands)
As part of the global trend of shifting and shrinking civic space, we have seen governments and other powerful actors deploy stigmatizing and delegitimizing narratives to undermine the legitimacy of CSOs and civic action. Where we see civic space being closed, we see specific narratives being used as part of the strategy to shrink the space that civil society, activists, people have to speak out and hold their government to account. We are interested in understanding this better and in testing the assumption that if specific narratives are used to close space, can they also be used to open space.
