Academic Blogging: Towards Transformative Research Communication, Online, 02 December 2024

14:00–16:00 CET, Registration Deadline: 24 November 2024

Academic blogging refers to the practice of scholars, researchers, or academics writing blog posts on academic topics. It provides a platform for sharing research findings, discussing academic trends, and engaging with a broader audience beyond traditional academic circles. Academic blogs can cover a wide range of subjects, from specific research studies to general academic advice or commentary on current events in academia. It can be a valuable tool for building a personal brand, networking with peers, and contributing to public discourse.

While an increasing number of academics are blogging about their research and research-related activities and experiences, traditional methods of communicating research, such as publishing research findings in academic journals or books, remain preferred. These channels are well known for keeping scientific/academic knowledge under lock and key in the form of paywalls, for requiring detailed accounts of methodological practices, and for encouraging dense, jargonistic writing.

Academic blogging provides an alternative to such platforms and, therefore, to this form of research communication by promoting attractive, succinct, and understandable texts written for diverse audiences across boundaries and borders. In this way, academic blogging can be transformative and can contribute to the decolonization of science and its communication.

Academic blogging workshop

On 2 December 2024, EADI will be offering a workshop on academic blogging. The workshop will take place online from 14:00–16:00. The workshop will be presented by Lize Swartz, editor of the ISS Blog Bliss, the academic blog of the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands (an EADI member institute). Swartz will draw on her extensive experience in the field of research communications to introduce workshop participants to academic blogging and equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to start blogging in an academic setting.

Participants will learn:

  • What academic blogging is all about and why it is a valuable research communications tool;
  • What the key elements are of academic blog articles and things that should be kept in mind; and
  • How to develop a blogging strategy and how to get started on writing an acadmic blog article.

Insights on academic blogging based on practical experience will be shared alongside tips and tricks, as well as the do’s and don’ts of writing academic blog articles and how and where to share the article after it has been published online to ensure that it is read, understood, and engaged with. Participants will receive a how-to guide that they can use for writing academic blog articles. The workshop will include a short Q&A session.

By the end of the workshop, participants will know what academic blogging is, why it is useful and important, and how to go about drafting an academic blog article. It is hoped that after the workshop, participants will put their newly acquired knowledge into practice to develop their academic blogging skills.
