Faculty of Society and Economics, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Tourism is a major global industry. It’s particularly significant in Germany, where tourism is both a major source of revenue and an industry with many work and career opportunities. These opportunities span both the private and public sector, ranging from hotel management, transportation, travel agencies, to government agencies and organisations dedicated to tourism or natural conservation. Well-trained experts in the field of tourism are in high demand in each of these sectors.
The continued growth of the global tourism industry presents both positive and negative changes. On the one hand, it drives job creation and is an essential source of revenue for a plethora of countries. On the other hand, it can have a lasting negative effect on the environment and local cultures. The Sustainable Tourism programme tackles this dilemma through the study of sustainable development, teaching future tourism experts how to strive for balance between the many conflicting social, ecological and economic considerations.
