PhD Programme on Innovation, Economics and Governance for Development
During their first year, fellows complete an intensive programme of required and elective courses,taught by leading scholars of the UNU-MERIT and our partner universities. These courses are taught in English, in Maastricht, and spread across two semesters, starting in September each year. The course work is followed by three years of dissertation research and writing, ending with a completed PhD thesis. At the end of the programme, the doctoral degree is awarded by Maastricht University upon successful defence of the thesis.

Our PhD programme is a multidisciplinary course offered by UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance. The programme focuses on research skills and methods, training fellows to become both scholars and practitioners in the fields of governance and the economics of technology. The programme provides advanced training in the knowledge ans skills most relevant to the economics of technology and innovation, and to governance, social protection and migration. International Development MSc
Four distinct pathways provide a choice of flexibility and breadth, or the chance to pursue a particular interest in greater depth. Innovative learning approaches promote in-depth investigation of particular cases and issues. These will draw out connections and contradictions between different actors and analytical perspectives, across global, regional, national and local scales. The opportunity of a placement, leading to a work-based project, will provide hands-on experience to complement classroom-based learning.

This MA draws on wide-ranging expertise of faculty at both IDS and School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex (where you will be based). You will gain an advanced understanding of the complex relationship between food and development. We build your analytical and practical skills, improving your ability to engage critically with issues such as:

- sustainable food systems
- value chains and corporate power
- agri-food technology and its contestations
Our faculty have extensive knowledge and direct field experience. And our guest speakers – from government bodies, international organisations, NGOs, and local food networks and movements – introduce you to contemporary policy debates and practices.

Food security has been at the top of the policy agenda for decades, but still a considerable proportion of the world’s population remains hungry and malnourished. Ensuring food security and improved nutrition for a growing global population is a significant challenge, which requires a fundamental shift in the way we understand and manage food production, distribution and consumption. The objective of this course is to develop the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing food and nutrition security at global and local levels and discuss and compare options for how we can move towards food security and improved nutrition in various contexts.

Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security (M.Sc.)
As a joint programme by the Department of Geography and the United Nations University in Bonn, the course provides a unique combination of advanced conceptual and applied engagements with the field of environmental risks and human security in an international context.
Fields of expertise include Vulnerability Assessment, Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Development, Disaster Management, Climate Change Adaptation, Human-Nature Relationships, Science & Technology Studies, Development Geography, Geomorphology, Socio-Hydrology, Future Studies, GIS and Remote Sensing.
The Programme consists of 11 modules, of which nine are taught in the first three semesters followed by a compulsory internship and the independent work on the Master’s thesis. An internship of at least eight weeks is a compulsory part of the programme.
The programme’s primary goals are:
- Theoretical and methodological expertise in the field of environmental risks and human security combined with practical experiences
- Strong focus on developing countries/ the “Global South”
- Intercultural and interdisciplinary learning environment
- Possibility to engage in ongoing research projects at both institutions
