A Resilient Future: Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction
What you'll learn
Participants will be able to:
- Explain Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) related concepts and science and technology for DRR.
- Identify and describe existing and emerging technologies for landslide and flood reduction.
- Explain methodological tools to assess vulnerabilities and risk and strengthen the resilience of communities at risk of landslides, floods and earthquakes.
- Exemplify the role and the challenges of science and technological innovations for disaster risk reduction in an interdisciplinary manner including the importance of social aspects.
- Recognize some of the actors active in DRR and international policy frameworks and technology for DRR.

This course aims to introduce participants to existing and emerging technologies suitable for disaster risk reduction while promoting the overall aim of sustainable development. The course focuses on three main natural hazards- floods, landslides and earthquakes. It also discusses the challenges and limits of adapting and adopting technologies depending on context (Global North and Global South) with examples from Switzerland, Nepal, Colombia, Philippines and other countries.What you'll learn

This course examines different forms, causes, and effects of fraud and corruption in developing countries. Course participants receive an introduction to the main concepts and mechanisms of prevention, detection, investigation and sanctioning adopted by the international development community. By using case studies and practical examples, the course prepares participants for dealing with fraud- and corruption-related issues in the context of concrete development programs and projects.Duration: 23.10. – 25.10.2019

The Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflict
Based in Geneva, this executive programme runs for nine months (October–June) and admits 15 to 20 practitioners annually. Six to nine additional months are needed to complete a master’s thesis and defend it before a jury.
Courses take place on Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons at our headquarters, Villa Moynier. They cover the law of armed conflict, international human rights law and international criminal law. They also address current issues and challenges, including the repression of terrorism, peacekeeping and international refugee law.
Taught by Geneva-based law professors and world-renowned law experts and professors, the programme enables participants to gain specialized knowledge directly applicable to professional work. It also responds to the growing need for specialists to address complex situations – in Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere – and challenging processes such as criminal proceedings, international negotiations and humanitarian interventions.
Diplomats, lawyers, legal advisers, judges, NGO staff, human rights advocates, media specialists, professionals working in emergency situations, UN staff and staff from other international organizations share expertise, discuss pressing concerns and reflect on the application of international law to their work.

Food security has been at the top of the policy agenda for decades, but still a considerable proportion of the world’s population remains hungry and malnourished. Ensuring food security and improved nutrition for a growing global population is a significant challenge, which requires a fundamental shift in the way we understand and manage food production, distribution and consumption. The objective of this course is to develop the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing food and nutrition security at global and local levels and discuss and compare options for how we can move towards food security and improved nutrition in various contexts.
