An Introduction to Farmer-Led Irrigation Course
Global Development Institute (GDI)
Improving agricultural productivity is key to achieving food security, economic growth and rural employment in Africa – and irrigation plays a vital role. In the last few years, there’s been a growing recognition of the contribution and potential of farmer-led irrigation systems. Farmer-led irrigation development appears to exceed the extent of all public and corporate irrigation schemes. This free, online introductory course provides a summary of the many practical and policy questions which are raised by the phenomenon of farmer-led irrigation development in Africa. The course is aimed at practitioners, researchers and students interested in finding out more about the issues around farmer-led irrigation. It can be completed at your own pace and has been optimised to work in locations with low bandwidth. It features introductions to key concepts, interviews with farmers engaged in irrigation, practical advice and policy implications around farmer-led irrigation. Links to further reading and more information are included for those who wish to interrogate the topic more deeply.DegreeCourse TypeLanguage

The MA in European Integration is a degree programme that allows individuals with direct experience of working in EU affairs or highly specialised, motivated graduates to undertake targeted research in areas relating to the EU and integration and which, through applied research, would lead to substantive work which contributes to our knowledge of EU affairs as well as contributing to the good of society. It need not be added that the range of research topics will also depend on the availability of Institute staff in providing the necessary supervision. In this way, the MA by Research breaks from the Institute’s traditional approach of seeking to create informed generalists and aims to take candidates with a substantial background in EU affairs and produce highly specialised graduates with applied knowledge in their chosen area of research. The degree programme combines both a taught element and research. Industrial Policy in the 21st Century – The Challenge for Africa
United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) is launching its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Industrial Policy in the 21st Century – the Challenge for Africa, as a self-paced course.
This course is based on a decade of research by UNU-WIDER, in partnership with the Brookings Institute, inspired by three key questions: Why is there so little industry in Africa? Does it matter? Is there something we can do about it? According to the World Bank, Africa’s working-age population is expected to increase by nearly 70% by 2035. Without industrialization to create jobs, it will be difficult to achieve sustainable development. While manufacturing led to rapid industrialization in East Asian countries, there is doubt that it can have the same effect in Africa. The question is, if not through manufacturing, how can Africa promote economic growth? In this UNU-WIDER course, brought to you via the SDG Academy, you will hear from John Page and other leading voices in development economics about the range of activities known as ‘industries without smokestacks’, and learn how industrial policy that promotes the growth of these industries presents a win-win scenario for economic development in Africa.United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), Finland
