Combine the study of human geography with international development to learn how to tackle the biggest challenges facing the modern world – poverty and inequality, food security, climate change, conflict, global governance, sustainability and migration. You’ll study geography in depth and apply your knowledge and analysis to issues in international development. The course emphasises academic rigour and technical skills, whilst building your employability. You’ll gain practical skills training, field experience, and IT skills including in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).Fieldwork and field courses are a vital part of the degree. In addition to field-work elements in a number of the taught modules we have a weekend residential trip in the first year and a compulsory field trip module in the second year, either the UK or overseas. In your third year, you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands on experience through your dissertation research and/or Development Work Placement module.
The School of International Development is internationally renowned for its research. They work closely with the School of Environmental Sciences, which houses the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and a research group on Science, Society and Sustainability.

The Department of International Development at King's offers one undergraduate degree, which is our International Development BA. The course looks at rising economic powers like the BRIC countries as well as other successful economies such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey and South Korea.King’s international development programme asks what these countries have done that is distinctive and new. But, the programme also explores whether these changes are enduring and examine the ongoing challenges of national development facing these nations. King’s international development programme looks at emerging economies for policy innovations and solutions that may offer lessons for poorer regions and nations.
The International Development BA is an interdisciplinary programme covering Development Economics, Politics, Sociology, and Anthropology.

Wellesley College and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva have established a programme that will enable a small number of students to complete a BA from Wellesley and an MA from the Graduate Institute in 5 years, instead of the normal 6 years.Scheme
Participating Wellesley College students will spend the fall semester of their senior year in Geneva, at the Graduate Institute. They will return to Wellesley for their final semester and for graduation. They will then return to Geneva for a 5th year. Most classes are taught in English. Students with limited or no French will study French as part of their programme in Geneva.

This programme explores some of the world’s most pressing development challenges, from poverty and inequality, to migration, conflict and climate change. In our increasingly globalised world, these problems are growing in complexity and significance. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to tackle these challenges by 2030, but this will require global effort, co-ordination and vision.On the BA International Relations and Development programme you will apply an international relations lens to understanding and addressing the challenge of global development and learn how development is affected by relations between states, in theory and in practice. You will explore theories of economic and social development, from colonialism to dependency, and develop core disciplinary skills in international relations and international political economy. You will apply these theories to a variety of examples of development and change from across the world, and critically examine different forms of development assistance, from aid to trade relations.
You will explore the implications of international relations for poverty, conflict and inequality through a range of case studies and practical exercises. The BA International Relations and Development programme uses real-world puzzles to bring to life the complex challenges of doing development in practice. It includes a specially designed Working in Development module, which will provide hands-on experience of common tools used in development projects and programmes. The International Relations and Development programme aims to bridge the gap between your academic study and future professional life by ensuring you can apply theory to practice, and providing you with real world insights.

Sophia University in Tokyo and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva have established a programme that will enable a small number of students to complete a BA from Sophia University and an MA from the Graduate Institute in 5 years, instead of the normal 6 years.Scheme
Eligible students from Sophia University will spend the first three years of BA at Sophia University; they will then be able to complete their BA (fourth year) while starting their MA at the Graduate Institute.

Train to make a difference on a global scale with a degree in international development and the environment. You’ll explore environmental issues in development such as climate change, water security, reconciling development needs with forest conservation, valuing biological diversity and sustainable natural resource management. At the same time you’ll discover the links between the environment, questions of policy, people’s livelihoods and poverty reduction.You’ll be on one of very few courses in the UK that integrates social and natural science, whilst taking a broad interdisciplinary approach to the study of development issues.
In your third year, you’ll spend three to four months gaining work experience abroad. For many students, this experience is the highlight of their time at university. You’ll graduate well prepared to work in one of the many development fields linked to the environment, sustainable natural resource management and rural livelihood improvement.

This programme combines a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of international development with core disciplinary training in politics, power and political economy. You will examine contested debates on democracy and development, the role of patronage in development, and the politics of social exclusion. You will apply political theories to a variety of examples of development and change from across the world, and critically examine different forms of development assistance.
