Research-based doctoral studies at UM provide students with the opportunity to pursue substantial independent research on their own under the guidance of their supervisors, who are experts in their field of research. Successful doctoral theses must, among other things, display evidence of substantial and original research, lucid and scholarly presentation, and a sound knowledge of the general field within which the thesis falls. Applicants who wish to pursue doctoral research at the University of Malta will normally have completed a second cycle Master’s degree programme.

Development Studies With Reference to Emerging Economies MPhil/PhD
Research at the department seeks to explore critical perspectives on economic growth, modernisation and ‘progress’ and to do so by exploring context-specific economic, social and political change in these countries rather than applying prescriptive models of development.
We have three research groups:
- Political Economy & Institutions Poverty,
- Inequality & Inclusive Growth
- Social Justice
Research expertise spans political science, sociology, social anthropology, development economics, history, geography and management. We have strong regional expertise and collaborations in Latin America and SE Asia, in China and India. The African Leadership Centre hosted by DID brings unique connections with the African continent and offers a separate programme in Leadership Studies with reference to Security and Development.

The Department of International Development (DID) at King's has a different agenda to traditional development studies in the UK and wider afield. International Development Studies (PhD)
The PhD in International Development Studies is an interdis-ciplinary, structured programme. It is offered by the IEE in collaboration with the Faculties of Geosciences (Geography Department), Law Science, Social Sciences and Economics. Besides working on their individual research projects partici-pants have to attend a variety of compulsory lectures and seminars, including:
• Lecture cycle „International Development”
• Economic Perspectives of Development
• Social Science Perspectives of Development
• Empirical Methods and Statistical Analyses
Seminars and workshops aimed at the training of key aca-demic competencies complement the program. Regular presentation and discussion of individual research projects is part of the IEE Research Cluster Meetings, which are attended by IEE research fellows, PhD candidates and their supervisors.
The application deadline is 30th April every year.

Since winter 2007, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy has been offering an international English-language PhD programme in International Development Studies. What kind of themes can I study in the Program?
Research themes for the doctoral thesis and course units are grounded in a broad range of issues related to the development of contemporary societies and its methodological variables and analytical tools. The emphasis is on agriculture and contemporary agrarian transformation; poverty, inequality and equity issues; development economics and aid finance; development cooperation, policy and political issues; geography and urbanization; migration and gender; security- development nexus; sustainable consumption, food production and ecosystem services; and modernity theoretical challenges to development.
These themes are explored in our PhD programme through course units related to the development of contemporary societies, including: theories of development and modernity, the policy and politics of development, sustainability transitions and a focus on urban development. The PhD in Development Studies is a 3rd cycle program of studies that aims to provide high quality training and produce original research in the area of Development Studies, a field of interdisciplinary research of the process of economic, social and political changes in modern societies. This PhD program was created in 2009 and accredited by the national agency A3ES in 2015. After 2017/18 this program became a joint PhD of ISEG (School of Economics and Management), ICS (Institute of Social Sciences), IGOT (Institute of Geographic and Spatial Planning) and ISA (School of Agriculture) of Universidade de Lisboa, with some changes in its content, recently approved by the national agency A3ES. This programme is lectured in English, but it will offer tutorials both in English and in Portuguese. The Doctoral Development Studies Programme is one of the programmes offered by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is promoted by the Hegoa Institute and the departments of Applied Economics I, Applied Economics IV, Sociology, Sociology II and Business Law and by the Gezki Institute. It holds a “Mention for Excellence” awarded by the Ministry of Education. It is intended to educate and train researchers in the topics covered by the relevant research lines. This is an interdisciplinary doctoral studies programme that promotes the preparation of doctoral theses which conduct critical, rigorous, in-depth analyses of globalisation, development processes and international cooperation. The Institute of Development Policy (IOB ) offers a multi-disciplinary Doctoral Programme, leading to a PhD in Development Studies administered by IOB and granted by the University of Antwerp. It in addition cooperates with the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) and the Faculty of Social Science (FSS) at the University of Antwerp to offer disciplinary PhD programmes in the field of development. The IOB PhD programme is related to the research agenda of IOB.
