Development Studies and Foresight (MA)
The program provides students with key knowledge and skills for a deeper understanding of problems affecting developing countries and the policies of international development including the skills for qualitative and quantitative research. The study program is based on three main pillars:
- Theoretical background
- Methodological background
- Regional orientation
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded the title of “Magister”, abbreviated as “Mgr.” which is equivalent to Master of Science (M.Sc.). Graduates are equipped to work in the field of international development in the public sector, private industry as well as in governmental and non-governmental organizations at both the national and international levels. Graduates can also find the opportunity to work as experts in projects run in low-income countries especially in the organizing and administering of projects both in the donor and target country, in diplomatic service, or in the academic sector.

We offer Development Studies and Foresight study program in which the students can select their specialization in International Development Studies or Foresight. The Master’s Program taught in English is the first of its kind in the Czech Republic and in the region of Central and Eastern Europe and is open to students worldwide. The degree is organized as a full-time program over a 2-year period with 120 study points. All teaching is in English, minimum requirements regarding English qualifications must be met. The degree consists of a series of courses including a Master’s thesis (30 or 60 points).
Students are encouraged to write their thesis on the basis of research carried out in ‘field’ conditions in developing or developed countries.
The first year consists of course work covering development theory and policy, research methodology, poverty, plus a range of elective subjects. Students design an individual study plan for the degree during the first semester, with the thesis usually written in the final Spring semester.
Field courses, internships and practicum provide valuable practical experience and are offered as electives. Compulsory courses can be waived for students with a strong background in the subject.

Development Studies With Reference to Emerging Economies MPhil/PhD
Research at the department seeks to explore critical perspectives on economic growth, modernisation and ‘progress’ and to do so by exploring context-specific economic, social and political change in these countries rather than applying prescriptive models of development.
We have three research groups:

- Inequality & Inclusive Growth
- Social Justice
Research expertise spans political science, sociology, social anthropology, development economics, history, geography and management. We have strong regional expertise and collaborations in Latin America and SE Asia, in China and India. The African Leadership Centre hosted by DID brings unique connections with the African continent and offers a separate programme in Leadership Studies with reference to Security and Development.

Besides working on their individual research projects partici-pants have to attend a variety of compulsory lectures and seminars, including:

• Empirical Methods and Statistical Analyses
Seminars and workshops aimed at the training of key aca-demic competencies complement the program. Regular presentation and discussion of individual research projects is part of the IEE Research Cluster Meetings, which are attended by IEE research fellows, PhD candidates and their supervisors.

Since winter 2007, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy has been offering an international English-language PhD programme in International Development Studies. It is implemented by the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy on behalf of the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Science, and Economics. This interdisciplinary course is designed to produce international development practitioners with advanced intercultural communication skills. You'll develop a critical understanding of the role culture and communication play in international development. Fieldwork and field courses are a vital part of the degree. Funded by heSam, it opens a joint seminar to become a digital module, to offer grants to the field and to set up an applied methodology workshop.
