The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Development and Cooperation offers students an inspiring environment in which they can acquire an understanding of local and global development challenges as well as the tools and methods to find innovative solutions to address them. The program combines studies at ETH with experiential learning at an international organization. This provides students with both the theoretical background and practical experience necessary to successfully pursue a career devoted to more inclusive and sustainable societies.Autumn Semester:
During the first semester, students acquire theoretical and empirical knowledge about the most pressing global and local challenges. The courses combine lectures and workshops and allow for extensive discussion between classmates and lecturers. The courses are bilingual (in German and English), multidisciplinary, and policy oriented.
In the core courses, students obtain a solid understanding of important historical, socioeconomic, political, and environmental development processes.
On-the-job-training:
The first study semester is followed by a 8-10 month on-the-job training with a multilateral, bi-lateral, or non-governmental organization. This job assignment is designed to immerse students in a complex and intercultural working environment.
Spring Semester
In the final semester, the students deepen their knowledge of specific methods and policies to address global and local development challenges. Students can select from numerous courses on methods to identify innovative solutions or on policy implementation strategies that improve the livelihoods of the poor. They link cutting-edge research with policies and practice. MAS students are given the option of taking the block course on either a full-time (during the spring semester) or part-time basis, but must complete six courses within two years.

Turbulence, uncertainty, novelty and ambiguity (TUNA) have become key features in many countries where international cooperation is engaged, often alongside of actors from humanitarian aid, mediation and security. To cope with permanent change, successful strategies and programs need to enhance agility and collaboration in planning, management and steering. Combining theoretical input with case studies, this course explores the characteristics of fragility, how they can be assessed and monitored and how development programming has to be adapted. It also discusses cooperation between actors seeking to engage in these contexts.Duration: 25.11. – 29.11.2019

In recent years there has been increasing international interest in vocational education and training (VET). The discussion about the success factors of VET and the extent dual VET can offer advantages to developing countries however is still ongoing. Switzerland, with its own unique and strong VET system has a long tradition of implementing VET in development countries. Experts from the field will feed in their experience into the course, which provides an overview of the systems and process dimensions of VET, opportunities for VET implementation, their implications, as well as constraints. At the end, participants will have strengthened their competence in portfolio management for VET, skills development and labor market policies.Duration: 04.11. – 08.11.2019

Qualitative research has much to offer to the practical work of development organizations. This course will provide an overview of the principles and practice of qualitative research and illustrate ways in which qualitative research can be incorporated into the program cycle. Participants will learn to collect data using qualitative methods such as observation, interviews and focus group discussion, and will become familiar with the techniques of qualitative data analysis and the communication of results. The course aims to build the skills of development practitioners in using qualitative methods confidently, including the ability to communicate findings to different audiences.Duration: 28.10. – 01.11.2019

This course examines different forms, causes, and effects of fraud and corruption in developing countries. Course participants receive an introduction to the main concepts and mechanisms of prevention, detection, investigation and sanctioning adopted by the international development community. By using case studies and practical examples, the course prepares participants for dealing with fraud- and corruption-related issues in the context of concrete development programs and projects.Duration: 23.10. – 25.10.2019

Recognizing that development is inherently political, this course covers political processes and how they intertwine with the goals and strategies of various agents in international cooperation. It discusses the significance and implications of civil society’s efforts to foster voice and inclusion. The course provides a nuanced understanding of different strategic options and approaches to contribute to policy processes and offers tools that have proven to be effective in practical development cooperation work. This course introduces results-oriented project planning and monitoring in the field of development cooperation. Participants work through the different steps of project planning, using the logical framework approach, and learn how to design and implement monitoring. Practical examples and experience illustrate the steps of the project management cycle ranging from inception to project steering and reporting. The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Development and Cooperation (CAS ETH D&C) offers professionals a unique opportunity to learn about scientifically founded concepts on development, to apply tools for result-based management, to reflect on own experiences, and to share best-practice and discuss future practice with colleagues.
The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Development and Cooperation is a part-time continuing education program that enhances technical and methodological expertise in topics of international cooperation. The students benefit from both the knowledge of ETH researchers, who teach regularly at NADEL, as well as from experienced professionals who discuss specific practical aspects of development cooperation.Upon completion of the study program participants will be able to:→ apply important methods to the results-ori-ented planning, implementation and man-agement of development projects;
→ integrate cutting-edge knowledge of select-ed priority topics in the field of international cooperation into their work;
→ discuss issues of current importance in in-ternational development policy.
The study program is modular. At least 6 courses must be completed to reach the mini-mum total of 10 ECTS points. Aside from the two compulsory courses, participants can assemble their program from over 20 different method- and policy-oriented courses to become more accomplished in their daily work and advance their careers.
We welcome professionals from bilateral and international organizations, from NGOs and foundations, and from the private sector to join this part-time program of 6-8 weeks.

Dieser Kurs bietet eine Einführung in ergebnisorientierte Planung und Monitoring von Projekten der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZA). Die Teilnehmenden durchlaufen während des Kurses die verschiedenen Schritte der Projektplanung basierend auf dem «Logical Framework Approach» und lernen die Konzipierung und Implementierung von Projekt-Monitoring. Praktische Beispiele und Erfahrungen veranschaulichen alle Schritte des Projektmanagement-Zyklus von der Projekt-Identifikation bis zur Projektsteuerung und Berichterstattung. Während der Kurswoche werden Übungen mit Projektbeispielen der Teilnehmenden durchgeführt. Peer Learning ist dabei ein wichtiges Element.Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte
- Grundlagen des ergebnisorientierten Projektzyklusmanagements
- Methoden, Instrumente und Ressourcen, die für die Projektplanung benötigt werden
- Der «Logframe» als Projektplanungs- und Monitoring Instrument
- Methoden, Instrumente und Ressourcen, die für das Projekt-Monitoring und die Entwicklung eines Monitoring-Systems benötigt werden, einschließlich Indikatoren zur Bewertung der Zielerreichung und der Projektsteuerung
- Alternativen zum «Logframe» (Ansatz) im Projektzyklusmanagement
Dies ist ein Pflichtkurs für CAS-Studierende.
