An Introduction to Farmer-Led Irrigation Course
Global Development Institute (GDI)
Improving agricultural productivity is key to achieving food security, economic growth and rural employment in Africa – and irrigation plays a vital role. In the last few years, there’s been a growing recognition of the contribution and potential of farmer-led irrigation systems. Farmer-led irrigation development appears to exceed the extent of all public and corporate irrigation schemes. This free, online introductory course provides a summary of the many practical and policy questions which are raised by the phenomenon of farmer-led irrigation development in Africa. The course is aimed at practitioners, researchers and students interested in finding out more about the issues around farmer-led irrigation. It can be completed at your own pace and has been optimised to work in locations with low bandwidth. It features introductions to key concepts, interviews with farmers engaged in irrigation, practical advice and policy implications around farmer-led irrigation. Links to further reading and more information are included for those who wish to interrogate the topic more deeply.DegreeCourse TypeLanguage

Industrial Policy in the 21st Century – The Challenge for Africa
United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) is launching its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Industrial Policy in the 21st Century – the Challenge for Africa, as a self-paced course.
This course is based on a decade of research by UNU-WIDER, in partnership with the Brookings Institute, inspired by three key questions: Why is there so little industry in Africa? Does it matter? Is there something we can do about it? According to the World Bank, Africa’s working-age population is expected to increase by nearly 70% by 2035. Without industrialization to create jobs, it will be difficult to achieve sustainable development. While manufacturing led to rapid industrialization in East Asian countries, there is doubt that it can have the same effect in Africa. The question is, if not through manufacturing, how can Africa promote economic growth? In this UNU-WIDER course, brought to you via the SDG Academy, you will hear from John Page and other leading voices in development economics about the range of activities known as ‘industries without smokestacks’, and learn how industrial policy that promotes the growth of these industries presents a win-win scenario for economic development in Africa.United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), Finland

Research Master in Development Studies - Developing Societies and Political Recompositions
This training offer prepares for the research professions in their diversity: doctorate, but also more operational posts (NGOs, national institutions, international) requiring a research approach. Students are considered as young researchers and are associated in this capacity with the activities of doctoral students and researchers of the UMR "Development and Societies", which is backed by training.
The M2R is renewed this year by the creation of a "Cooperative Space Development Studies" elaborated in partnership with the Master ECD (Comparative Study of Development) of the EHESS. This project is one of the winners of the 2014 call for innovative pedagogical projects launched by héSam Université. Funded by heSam, it opens a joint seminar to become a digital module, to offer grants to the field and to set up an applied methodology workshop.
Institut d'Etude du Développement Economique et Social, Université Paris 1 (IEDES)
The M2 Research course on "Developing societies" is devoted to the study of the relationship between development practices and policies in societies in the South. This pathway is doubly versatile. It is not only pluridisciplinary in the social sciences, which differentiates it from other formations linked to mono-disciplinary paths, but also of a comparative character. She works on African, Latin American and Asian lands and approaches the various themes in a global way, going beyond the classic North / South dichotomy. This training offer prepares for the research professions in their diversity: doctorate, but also more operational posts (NGOs, national institutions, international) requiring a research approach. Community of Learning for Africa (CoLA)
Target group
The main aim of COLA is to build research capacity in Africa by assisting African PhD fellows locally, instead of educating a selected group of students in The Netherlands. We aim to connect to PhD fellows that are currently working on their PhD research on topics that fall within our institutional interest, and their local supervisors affiliated with universities in Africa. All participants on the platform (African PhD fellows and their supervisors) remain affiliated at their home universities, obtain their degrees from their own institution, and participate from abroad. Our platform aims to offer an additional service to both PhD student and supervisor, in the form of content training, access to resources and feedback.
The Platform
CoLA offers online training modules and online research support through our Moodle-based learning platform. The platform includes three pillars of services:
- Pillar one: Courses offering: Stand Alone and Tutored
- Pillar two: Repository of open Educational Resources
- Pillar three: Online community, with option to discuss, obtain feedback and offer support to other participants.
United Nations University, Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT)
CoLA is designed to increase access to knowledge and resources for PhD students working on their dissertations through African universities. CoLA is an online learning network developed by UNU-MERIT / MGSoG (UM) which aims to offer support for PhD fellows in Africa to conduct research and write high quality academic papers. This support is facilitated by offering content courses around the research themes of UNU-MERIT. In addition, the community offers a repository of useful open educational resources, and the option to obtain research feedback and platforms for discussion with other researchers.Target group
