EADI-IMEMO Workshop in Moscow

THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBALISATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE (SEMI-)PERIPHERAL COUNTRIES (China, India, Russia, Brazil, DR Congo)

From May 31 to June 2, 2001, a workshop on "The challenge of globalisation and the development of large (semi-)peripheral countries" took place in Moscow, Russia. This workshop, organized by the EADI working group "Rise and decline in the world system" together with the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, involved participants from Russia, India, China, Spain and the Netherlands.
The workshop focussed mainly on the role of the large (semi-)peripheral countries (China, India, Russia, Brazil and the RD Congo) in a world that is undergoing fundamental change.

Do these countries strengthen their positions or does their importance decrease in the light of globalisation and widespread IT development?
What can they do to protect their national interests, their national integrity and their cultural identity?

There was surely no easy answer to these complex questions but the workshop participants agreed that the (semi-)peripheral countries are both "globalisation makers" and "globalisation takers" and that they represent the connection between the post-industrial and the industrial/agrarian world. They should use this specific role to mediate between these worlds. Furthermore, they should use their joint influence to promote a different model of globalisation that takes into account the interests of less developed and developing countries.
