Argumentary:


Two objectives are assigned to the first preparatory research meeting of the EADI Working Group Europe-Asia launched in May 2007 as follows:

(1) a long-term objective: based on the background paper of the working group (which can be printed from the EADI website: www.eadi.org), to discuss among a small group of Asian and European scholars the research theme of the working group and identify possible research sub-themes to structure the working group's activities in 2008-12,
(2) a short-term objective: based on the already issued first call for papers of the working group's first plenary session under the 12th EADI General Conference (Geneva, 24-28 June 2008, conference website: www.eadi.org/gc2008 or www.conftool.com/gc2008), to organize the diffusion of the call both in Asia and Europe, and start the scientific planning of the first plenary session of the working group.

Morning session 1: Presentation of the new working group: Prof. Philippe Régnier (CAS, Geneva) and other co-convenors:

- Why a new EADI WG Europe-Asia?

- Long term objective (2008-12)

- First call of papers for EADI General Conference (June 2008)

- Identification of possible research sub-themes and co-founders of the WG

Morning session 2:
Presentation of WG background paper by Prof. E. Basile (Sapienza University,Rome):

- Introduction by Prof. E. Basile and other WG co-convenors

- Comments by Asian partners:
(Prof. T.C.A. Anant, Delhi School of Economics / Prof Guo Dingping, Fudan University, Shanghai / Prof. T. Tanbunan, Trisakti University, Jakarta)

- Open discussion (all participants)

Afternoon session 3:

- Reflection in 3 small groups on pre-identified research sub-themes for the WG in 2008-2012

First group: Asian and European capitalisms, revisiting concepts and theories (chair: Prof. E.Basile and Prof. R. Frank, University of Vienna)

Second group: Asian and European capitalisms, foreign economic policy in interregional and global relations (chair: Dr H. Loewen, GIGA Institute, Hamburg)

Third group: Asian and European capitalism, family business and internationalization of small/medium enterprises (chair: Prof. P. Régnier, CAS, Geneva)

- Possible linkages with organization of first WG session under already issued WG call for papers (12th EADI General Conference, Geneva, 24-28 June 2008)

Afternoon session 4:

- Debriefing by each of the 3 small reflection groups

- Detailed organization of first WG session, 12th GC, Geneva, 24-28 June 2008

- Definition of WG agenda (November 2007-June 2008)
