Practical Skills for Conducting Impact Evaluations

As an interactive workshop, this Masterclass will focus on the key aspect of impact evaluation in the context of development projects and programs. Training participants will be able to discuss key characteristics of impact evaluation such as identifying, assessing and measuring impact as well as organizational aspects of impact evaluation. Exercises during the workshop will facilitate practical skills-building for participants' future work.

The trainer will be Mrs. Nicola Reade-Soh, a freelance consultant with six years of experience in the field of evaluation & training in development cooperation. Her special interest lies in impact evaluation and results based monitoring. During her time working at the Center for Evaluation she acquired solid practical and theoretical experience in conducting impact evaluations using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods and applying rigorous evaluation designs. She has worked in various sectors such as education, vocational training, water, health, natural resources, energy, forestry and in various countries such as China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Thailand, Uganda, USA, Vietnam, Zambia.

What is Impact and How to Identify Impact?

  • Discussion & Group Work on Theories of Change

Evaluation Designs for Impact Evaluations

  • Assessing the Counterfactual - Randomization and Quasi- experimental Designs

12:00 Lunch

Practical Implementation of Impact Evaluation Designs

  • Discussion of Various Approaches, e.g. Randomization, Matching Methods, Double Difference and Single Difference Methods & Pipeline Methods
  • Group Work on Impact Evaluation Design

 

Day 2 (09:00 - 16:00)

  • Presentation/Discussion of Group Work Results

Data Collection Methods - Multi Method Approach

  • Discussion: What possible Data Collection Methods (Quantitative & Qualitative) for Impact Evaluation Exist? Is/Why Is a Multi-Method Approach advisable?

12:00 Lunch

Planning Impact Evaluations - What to consider

  • Considering Resources (time, budget, personnel)
  • Group Work on Planning Impact Evaluation & Presentation
  • Discussion of Group Work Results
  • Final Discussion: When Does Impact Evaluation Make Sense

 

The workshop will be held in English.
