Introduction To Climate Change And Its Development Implications

Climate Change will be a strong force influencing development policy. External relations of governments and organizations will be shaped by the implications of this impact. The EADI Masterclass on climate change will deal with the following key questions: What implications does climate change pose for development cooperation? How can the task of factoring there implications can be included in the development co-operation agenda?
This class will focus on impacts of climate change, adaptation strategies in developing countries and relation between mitigation and development. The class will be pitched at the level of development professionals - as suggested in the initial communications to us. Target group of the class are professionals dealing with climate issues in donor countries, professionals engaged in policy and practice in developing countries, within governmental and non-governmental organizations. Specific features of the Masterclass are:
- Brief review of climate science and global impact
- Introduction to screening project portfolios regarding the concept of climate change - including run through screening steps and presentation of existing guidance
- Assessing how development strategies might be affected by climate change. 3 breakout groups analyse the question, followed by feedback and discussion
- Screening exercise
- Review of adaptation projects and their critical assessment.
Lectures:
- Dr. Roger Few, Senior Research Fellow, International Development UEA - Dr. Few has expertise on vulnerability and adaptation to natural disasters and climate change. He has a special interest in household, community, and institutional response to health risks associated with extreme weather events, and is leading on health themes within the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. He is currently engaged on a series of climate risk assessment projects in Vietnam.
- Dr. Nick Brooks, Visiting Research Fellow, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research - Dr. Brooks focuses on human responses to severe and abrupt climate change and how responses to contemporary climate change are mediated by culture. He has a special interest in climate change in Africa. He has expertise in climate risk assessment, and providing strategic guidance on adaptation.
- Dr. Esteve Corbera, Senior Research Associate, International Development UEA - Dr Corbera has expertise in climate change policy and development. Current research includes evaluating the potential of low-carbon fuel options to promote development in South Africa and Kenya, and analysis of the factors influencing technological change and household choices for energy consumption.
The training programme consists of the following elements:
6 May
Lecture:
- Climate science and global impacts
- Vulnerability and adaptation in developing countries
- Mitigation and development
7 May
Discussion format: Group exercises and feedback discussions, key questions and discussion
- Round-table discussion with questions arising from day 1
- Introduction to screening project portfolios regarding the concept of climate change - including run through screening steps and presentation of existing guidance
- Group work assessing how development strategies might be affected by climate change. 3 breakout groups analyse the question, followed by feedback and discussion
- Group work screening exercise
- Group work confronting adaptation projects and their critical assessment. 3 breakout groups work on 3 different portfolios, followed by feedback and discussion
- Final open question slot and demonstration of web-based resources
The language of the workshop is English.

- Certificate of participation provided by EADI
