This is an international conference organised by the Institute of Economic Sciences
Belgrade (IEN, est. 1958) jointly with EADI on the occasion of the IEN's 45th
anniversary. The conference is supported by knowledge partners and the Ministry of STD
of the Republic of Serbia as well as by conference sponsoring organisations.

ESTABLISHMENT
The INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES (IEN), established in 1958 as a public non-profit company, is today the flagship institution with more than 45 years of advanced research in economic and development studies, world market and Yugoslav foreign economic relationships, business and enterpreneurship studies comprising consulting and training/educational activities. The Institute has carried out such programmes on a contractual basis either on its own or in co-operation with a wide range of Yugoslav private and government or international institutions and organisations in domestic as well as international projects. Permanent staff and joint members (scholars from the leading academic institutions as well as consultants and adjunct researchers) are truly devoted to sharing available professional experience including knowledge- and information-based resources with our national, regional and global environment.
MISSION
The objectives of the IEN, as set forth in its constitution and general programme orientation, are to foster research, consulting and education/training as well as to advance a professional approach and standards. Thus, the IEN mission is:
"Promoting excellence in economic analysis, research, marketing consulting, education
and training aiming to connect economic development and human welfare"
These objectives include the following:
- Encouraging and fostering research activities that advance knowledge in both economic
development and international business as well as increasing the available professional experience
of individuals, organisations and institutions; - Facilitating the exchange of information and ideas among people in academic, business and
government professions who are concerned with sustainable economic, social and enterprise
growth and development within national as well as an international/global milieu; - Co-operating and establishing working and professional linkages with government, international,
business, research and academic organisations to further the objectives of the Institute.
The IEN is member of EADI as well as other international, regional and national professional organisations
and associations.
ACTIVITIES
The IEN's general programme orientation covers the following research,
consulting and training activities:
I. ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (ESD)
- Theory and policy of economic development: international, regional, social and
ecological development as well as the issues relating to structural changes and
adjustments - Transition and privatisation
- Macroeconomic policy: exchange rate policy, monetary and credit policy, wages
and income, financial system and banking - Technological development and policy
- Current analyses and prognoses
II. WORLD MARKET AND YUGOSLAV FOREIGN ECONOMIC STRATEGY (WMS)
- Relations with international institutions: development, monetary, financial and
trade-related - Yugoslav economy and the European Union,
- Competitiveness, regionalisation, economic/trade liberalisation and protection
policy, - FDI, international trade, transfer of technology, TNC and globalisation
- Foreign investment in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
- Regional economic co-operation and incentives
III. BUSINESS AND ENTERPRENEURSHIP RESEARCH & CONSULTING (BERC)
- Organisation and transformation of enterprises and banks
- Market research and consulting
- Strategic management consulting
- Investment and feasibility studies
- Micro, small and medium-sized development, business and enterpreneurship
IV. TRAINING AND EDUCATION (TEDU)
- Specialised courses on select topics by partner organisations
- Teach-in and workshop seminars in marketing, management and international
