Meeting of the Directors of EADI Member Institutes

Past meetings: September 2005 in Bonn during the EADI General Conference, hosted by the German Development Institute (DIE), February 2005 in Geneva, hosted by the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED) and September 2003 in Pavia, hosted by CICOPS.

What is the EADI Directors' Meeting? Some background information

European development research institutes are increasingly facing changes. Some factors of changes are identifiable, such as budget pressure, technology drivers, question of impact on policy, relation to southern institutes, research funding and changes in development studies.

Conscious of these changes, EADI as a professional association of development research and training institutes with more than 150 institutional members in 30 European countries has established the EADI Directors’ Meeting which was for the first time organised in Pavia, Italy, on the 6th of September in 2003. The participating directors appreciated the meeting as in many ways very successful and groundbreaking. Three major proposals were made by directors and submitted to EADI.

a) Make a task force to propose a quality stamp for EADI affiliated institutes and EADI courses in order to subsequently develop accreditation standards for research and training programmes that can be shared with the relevant European or national accreditation agencies.

b) Develop knowledge exchange among EADI institutes and with users and bring forward joint projects.

c) Organise Directors’ Meetings periodically using the Pavia formula, which was appreciated because it combined intellectual stimulation with practical issues to be solved through collective action. A summary report and other relevant articles about the Pavia Directors’ Meeting can be downloaded at the EADI webpage www.eadi.org.
